Council member Evan Glass sent the following statement to Moderately MOCO when asked about the proposed 3.5 cent property tax increase:
“Over the last few weeks I have heard from residents across Montgomery County who have expressed their thoughts about the county executive’s 3.5 cent property tax increase.
I share their concerns that now is not the time for a property tax increase.
Montgomery County is home to 70,000 federal workers and tens of thousands of contractors who are currently facing financial uncertainty due to President Trump’s dismantling of the federal workforce. Many residents across the county have also seen their property values increase by upwards of 40% following assessments from the State Department of Assessment and Taxation.
Increasing the property tax rate now would only worsen the financial anxiety that many in our community are experiencing.
As the council deliberates the FY26 operating budget, I will urge my colleagues to find cost savings and oppose this tax increase. I believe that we can fund Montgomery County Public Schools and strengthen our social safety net without raising property taxes.
We must be mindful of the current economic situation we are in and prepare for the precarious future ahead.”
After County Executive Marc Elrich proposed a 3.5 cent property tax increase, residents have come out both against and for the increase.
Council member Andrew Friedson and Council member Laurie-Anne Sayles have also come out against the tax hike.
Council member Glass recently announced and kicked off his campaign to be the County’s next County Executive.
