Why Are You Running For Office?
I’m running for Montgomery County Council because Montgomery County gave my family opportunity, stability, and a place to thrive. As an immigrant whose family fled political persecution, I know firsthand how strong schools, good jobs, and responsive government can change lives. My family benefited from this county’s quality education, economic opportunity, and community resources, and I want to ensure those opportunities remain available for the next generation. I’m running to help keep Montgomery County affordable, strengthen our economy, support excellent public schools, and protect the quality of life that makes this county such a special place to live.
What Is The Biggest Issue Facing Voters In This Race?
The biggest challenge facing Montgomery County is affordability. Too many residents are feeling squeezed by the rising cost of housing, child care, health care, and everyday necessities. We must expand housing options, grow good-paying jobs, support small businesses, keep taxes in check, and expand education and training pipelines to help people get connected with high demand jobs. Montgomery County should be a place where people can afford to live, work, raise a family, and retire.
What Experience Best Prepares You For This Role?
I currently serve on the Montgomery County Board of Education where I have helped oversee one of the largest public school systems in the country and a multibillion-dollar budget. My experience working with educators, families, community organizations, and county leaders has given me a deep understanding of how local government decisions affect residents’ daily lives. Before serving on the Board of Education, I worked for county government helping residents connect with county services and now I work at Montgomery College as Director of Community Engagement helping residents connect with workforce development opportunities. I have been working deeply in communities all over this county for nearly 20 years.
What Would You Like Voters To Know About You Personally?
I am a proud Montgomery County resident, a mother of two daughters who recently graduated from MCPS, and an immigrant from Guatemala whose parents taught me the importance of hard work, community, and public service. I believe in the power of people helping people so I mentor first-generation college students. I have a dog named Daisy who keeps me company during early morning and late nights of campaign work. I enjoy hiking, jogging, and being outdoors.
