A Montgomery County parent advocacy group has joined a regional coalition calling on school districts across the DMV to pause the use of student-facing generative artificial intelligence in schools.
Schools Beyond Screens Montgomery County, which grew out of the MCCPTA Technology Committee, is part of a coalition representing parents, educators, students and community members from school districts in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. The group launched a petition on July 4 urging districts to halt student-facing AI tools while officials evaluate their safety, effectiveness and impact on learning.
The effort comes as Montgomery County Public Schools is working on artificial intelligence regulations following the Board of Educationโs approval of a revised educational technology policy in May. Earlier this year, the Montgomery County Council of PTAs also unanimously passed a resolution seeking a pause on student-facing generative AI.
