At New Ways Barre in Gaithersburg, strength takes many forms. Owner Susan Ways embodies all of them. Ways’ vision to open her own barre studio was born during one of the most difficult seasons of her life. After the passing of her husband, she searched for purpose and a path forward. She found barre and practiced regularly, finding it to be more than just a workout – it became a place of healing, strength, and connection.
“It gave me a space where I could take care of my body while also being surrounded by a supportive community,” Ways said. “It was incredibly meaningful during a time when
I needed it most.”
Last summer, Ways set out to create a similar, nurturing place for others. She wanted her studio to be more than a fitness space, but a place where people can come together, move their bodies, and find comfort as they go through whatever life may bring their way.
“My hope is that when people walk through the doors, they feel like they’ve entered a space that nourishes their mind, body, and soul,” she said. “Whether someone is navigating the everyday stresses of life or something much more significant.”
The second-floor studio overlooks Kentlands’ quaint Main Street and clients call it an escape from the world “out there.” “The hour here means something different for everyone,” shared Ways. “There is no typical barre student,” she added. “Our classes attract twenty-somethings through retirees.”
Classes are small; no more than ten clients, and vary in style and energy level. Instructor Lisa Cline shared, “the wonderful thing about barre is that you can make it harder or easier depending on what you want to get out of it, or what kind of day you’re having.”
Sound bath meditations and pop-up wellness events populate the calendar, as do themed classes.
Classes can be purchased singly, in multi-packs, and as monthly and annual memberships.
