One of the most star-studded games in all of Maryland took place in the Cougar Dome this Friday between the Quince Orchard Cougars and the C.H. Flowers Jaguars. The Cougars emerged victorious after a close 21-10 battle.ย
The Jaguars came out firing after a quick strip-sack on QB Will Drakeford. They ultimately kicked a field goal to take an early 3-0 lead. Following this, QO leaned back on the strong run game they have relied on all year. This time, it was Jaheim Bond who led the Cougars down the field after a 65-yard handoff. Damian Hurtado would capitalize on the play by Bond, which led to the Cougars taking a 7-3 lead. This game highlighted head coach John Kelleyโs unique playbook, with him utilizing multiple running back sets and read options.

Following the quick drive by QO, the defense got hot. They shut down the Flowers rushing attack early, which has been their go-to in the offense this year. The main contributor to the Cougar defense was Jaheim Bond. Bond had three tackles for loss to go along with 2.5 sacks on the day. Diego Rodriguez got in with Bond to secure a sack for himself. Following the strong defensive drive, QO committed a second turnover, which gave Flowers great field position. This time, it was Senior Jake Bumgardner who came up big, having a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. This drive showed how important the game was to both teams, as tempers flew between the two teams.

Following the strong defensive performance, Drakeford threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, giving the Jaguars a 10-7 lead. Drakeford responded by rushing in a touchdown, making the score 14-10 going into halftime.

Coming out of the half, both teams seemed to hold each other in check. Both teams’ defenses played very well, leading to a scoreless third quarter. Despite that, Kacey Gilliam and Jaheim Bond continued to play well on the defensive line for the Cougars. It was not until late into the fourth quarter that there would be another score. On a crucial 4th and goal from the Flowersโ 5-yard line, Will Drakeford scrambled into the end zone, where he shed several tackles along the way. This touchdown was crucial in moving the score to at least two possessions for Flowers with under two minutes left. Ultimately, the game was sealed after senior Camden Taylor came up with an interception with a minute left in the game.

Quince Orchard now looks to face Broadneck next week for their final home game of the year and the last game before the state championship at Navy Stadium.
