Another heavyweight top-three matchup in the 4A West Division took place in Potomac, MD, as the Churchill Bulldogs hosted the Quince Orchard Cougars. The Cougars made a statement with a 34-13 road victory over the Bulldogs.
The game started out as a defensive battle, with only one touchdown in the first quarter for either team, coming on a touchdown pass from QB Will Drakeford to TE Diego Rodriguez. Rodriguez had a huge game on both sides of the ball, hauling in three touchdown catches from Drakeford.

Two-way player Rico Jackson also had an impressive touchdown in which he shed multiple tackle attempts by the Churchill defense. The Churchill offense, who had impressive wins over Northwest and Walter Johnson, struggled to find momentum until the final drive of the half, heading into halftime down 21-7.

The game looked to be in reach for Churchill after a long passing touchdown that cut the game to 21-13. However, the Cougars special teams unit was able to block the extra point attempt to remain ahead by eight. They rode that momentum, preventing any more points from the Bulldogs offense. CB Amarโee Wilson had multiple impressive plays, including a near one-handed interception attempt that ultimately dropped. He already has 3 interceptions already on the year. Some other impressive players on the defense were Defensive end Kacey Gilliam and linebacker Diego Rodriguez. Gilliam had two sacks on the day and Rodriguez had multiple tackles for loss. The Cougar offense continued to roll through the third and fourth quarters. They were able to tack on 2 additional touchdownsโone through the air to Rodriguez for his third of the day, and one on the ground from a QB sneak by Drakeford.

Tight end Jacob Bumgardner set up the sneak with a long catch that was stopped on the one-yard line. Quince Orchard’s usually dominant running game had a slower day following the loss of top running back Jaiden Hebron, who has been sidelined with an injury. Despite this, Damian Hurtado and Jeremiah Williams stepped up and performed their roles well.

The Cougars are getting ready to host the Sherwood Warriors for their homecoming game on Friday at 6:30 PM. The Warriors are coming off a big 41-0 win over Clarksburg. The Bulldogs will look to bounce back Thursday against the Gaithersburg Trojans.
