When the numbers come in

Mail-in ballots counted before Election Day are held until all polls close, according to the State Board of Elections. Election Day precincts report through the night after that.

Some races will not be settled Tuesday. Montgomery County’s elections board counts more mail-in ballots on Nov. 5, 7, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17 and 18, and counts provisional ballots at a later canvass, according to its canvass schedule. Mailed ballots postmarked by Election Day count if they arrive by 10 a.m. Nov. 13. Our results page keeps updating through the count.

How we call races

Moderately MOCO calls a race only when the ballots still left to count cannot change the outcome. Maryland’s election officials do not call races; results stay unofficial until the county certifies them. As we call races, we will publish a story on each of the major contests, each with its own live results.
