Election Day in Maryland is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and anyone in line by 8 p.m. can vote. Here is what Montgomery County voters need to know, plus when to expect results. Voter guides and links are on our voting page, moderatelymoco.com/vote.

Voting in person

  • Go to your assigned polling place. On Election Day it may not be where you voted early. Find it with the State Board of Elections’ Polling Place Locator.
  • Not registered, or moved? You can register or update your address at your polling place on Election Day. Bring a document with your name and address, such as an MVA-issued license or ID card, a paycheck, bank statement or utility bill, the state says.
  • Check your registration with the state’s Voter Lookup.

Still have a mail-in ballot?

  • Put it in one of Montgomery County’s 58 official drop boxes by 8 p.m. Tuesday, or hand it in at the county elections office by then.
  • Or mail it postmarked by Nov. 3. A mailed ballot counts if it arrives by 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13.
  • Don’t forget to sign the oath on the envelope.

As of Oct. 31, the county had sent 141,514 mail-in ballots and received 82,968 back, according to State Board of Elections data. That left 58,546 not yet returned. Another 93,190 people voted early.

On the ballot

Federal, state and county offices, plus three statewide ballot questions (constitutional amendments). There are no county ballot questions this year.

Takoma Park and Poolesville also hold town elections on Nov. 3, at separate polling places. Takoma Park’s city election is at the Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Ave., 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. (city election page). Poolesville elects two commissioners at Town Hall, 19721 Beall St., 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. (town election page). Residents voting in both elections vote in two places.

When results come in

Results start after polls close Tuesday night. Mail-in ballots counted before Election Day are held until all polls close, according to the State Board of Elections. Close races may not be settled that night: as of Oct. 31, about 34,000 mail-in ballots the county had received were still waiting to be counted, and more will arrive through Nov. 13.
