Dear MCPS Families,
Beginning in fall 2027, Montgomery County Public Schools will launch a new Regional High School Model designed to give students more choices and more opportunities. This change builds on our current specialized programs by organizing them into a regional model, reducing barriers, such as long travel distances, expanding the number of available seats in classrooms, and creating more consistent access to programs across the county. High schools will be organized into six geographic regions, each offering programs connected to student interests and future careers.
Why does this change matter?
For many students, access to specialized programs has been limited, either by a small number of seats or long commutes. This new approach will open the door for more students to explore their interests and prepare for their future, allowing them to participate in high-quality specialized programs closer to home.
What does this mean for your student?
Students can choose to apply to a specialized pathway in areas, such as healthcare, technology, leadership, languages or the arts. Regardless of the pathway, students will continue to attend their home high school and take part in strong academics, athletics, arts and activities.
When will this begin?
Implementation will start with students entering 9th grade in the 2027โ2028 school year (current 7th graders). The model will roll out one grade level at a time, with full implementation by the 2030โ2031 school year. Students will be assigned to the new regional programs as follows:
- 2027-2028 school year: 9th grade students
- 2028-2029 school year: 9th and 10th grade students
- 2029-2030 school year: 9th, 10th and 11th grade students
- 2030-2031 school year: 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students
Whatโs next?
Weโve launched a Regional Programs webpage that we hope will be your go-to source for the latest information as this work moves forward. On the site, you can explore program options and regional maps and find answers to frequently asked questions. Check back often as we will share updates along the way.
You can also watch an overview of the Regional Programs model and read moreabout the Board of Educationโs approval.
