Why Are You Running For Office?
Many families in Maryland face—as my family did—impossible choices that seem like no choice at all. Do you care for your loved one or work more hours / work at all? Do you seek medical care for yourself or your child when the copay may bust the food budget? Many people delay seeking medical care because they can’t afford the cost of the diagnosis or the treatment. These impossible choices are the result–at least in part–of choices made in Annapolis over the past several decades. I think we all deserve better choices–and so need different legislators. I will fight for support for family caregivers, housing stability and energy affordability, schools and skills that serve all our children, support for small businesses and innovation.
What Is The Biggest Issue Facing Voters In This Race?
It’s not just one thing. It’s many. And they are connected. The biggest issue within the legislature’s traditional purview is affordability. Housing, electricity, and care. There are a lot of ways the MGA can address these: using incentives like fast-tracking to speed construction of the housing we want, requiring energy super-users to generate their own power, and providing supports for all family caregivers.
What Experience Best Prepares You For This Role?
I have years of experience solving complex problems, finding common ground, building coalitions, and getting stuff done–first as a professional and government contractor and for the last three years as an advocate for a broad range of issues and as legacy leader in the general assembly and for the Lieutenant Governor.
What Would You Like Voters To Know About You Personally?
I am a long time resident of District 18. Stephen, my husband of 32+ years, and I raised our three children in Chevy Chase. Missourian by birth, Marylander by choice, I am a mother, daughter, wife, and former professional (20+ years). I chair public policy for the Montgomery County Commission on Aging and lead advocacy for the Montgomery County Women’s Democratic Club (WDC). I worked as a legacy leader in the House of Delegates for two sessions and also for the Lieutenant Governor. I believe that the gap between hard work and security is not a personal failing. It is a policy choice. We can choose differently.
