Montgomery County Sheriff Maxwell C. Uy is seeking reelection after over three decades of service in the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and four years leading the agency as the county’s elected sheriff.
Uy made history in 2022 as the first Asian American elected Sheriff of Montgomery County. His career with the Sheriff’s Office began in 1994 following active-duty military service. Since then, he has served in every division of the agency, gaining experience across its wide range of public safety and community service responsibilities. Prior to his election as sheriff, Uy served as Chief Deputy of Operations under the previous administration.
A longtime Montgomery County resident, Uy and his wife raised two children who graduated from Montgomery County Public Schools. He says that local roots and decades of service have shaped his commitment to the community and the residents served by the Sheriff’s Office.
Accomplishments During His First Term
Since taking office, Uy has focused on strengthening the Sheriff’s Office through recruitment, organizational improvements, and maintaining strong partnerships with community organizations, elected officials, and public safety agencies.
Among the accomplishments highlighted by his campaign:
- Successfully led the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office through reaccreditation by the Commission for Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), ensuring the agency continues to follow nationally recognized law enforcement best practices.
- Implemented innovative recruitment and hiring strategies that reduced staffing vacancies from approximately 20% to 5%, helping ensure the office can continue delivering essential services to residents.
- Restructured the Sheriff’s Office to improve operational efficiency and maintain a high level of service for Montgomery County residents.
Uy says these efforts have positioned the Sheriff’s Office to better serve the community while preparing for future challenges.
Priorities for a Second Term
As he campaigns for reelection, Uy says he wants to build upon the progress made during his first term while continuing to focus on services that directly impact residents.
One priority is maintaining and strengthening support for the Montgomery County Family Justice Center, which provides resources and assistance to survivors of domestic violence and family violence. Uy says ensuring these services remain available and effective is critical for protecting vulnerable residents and families.
He also points to the Sheriff’s Office’s work surrounding evictions and housing stability. While the office is responsible for carrying out court-ordered evictions, Uy says his administration has worked closely with community partners and stakeholders to help minimize displacement whenever possible and connect residents with available resources.
According to Uy, Montgomery County is facing an important moment as it navigates ongoing challenges related to public safety, housing, and community services. He believes continuity of leadership and operational experience will help the Sheriff’s Office continue meeting those challenges effectively.
“Steady, proven leadership matters in challenging times. I am committed to ensuring the residents of Montgomery County receive the best possible services from the Sheriff’s Office.”
— Sheriff Maxwell C. Uy
Looking Ahead
Uy says his campaign is focused on his record of service, leadership experience, and commitment to maintaining a Sheriff’s Office that serves residents with professionalism, accountability, and compassion.
Having served in every division of the Sheriff’s Office and led the agency through a period of organizational improvements and staffing growth, Uy says he is prepared to continue building on those successes if reelected.
