Conflicting Accounts Emerge After Altercation at Bohrer Park Early Voting Site; Assault Summons Issued

An altercation between Maryland Delegate Gabriel Acevero and local union leader Fiorigi “Gino” Renne at the Bohrer Park early voting site on Thursday has resulted in conflicting accounts of what occurred, a police report, and a court summons alleging second-degree assault.

Both men claim they were the victim of the confrontation, and both have indicated they intend to pursue legal action.

The incident occurred Thursday evening at the Bohrer Park Activity Center in Gaithersburg, which is serving as an early voting location for Montgomery County’s 2026 primary election.

Police Confirm Incident but Made No Arrests

According to the Gaithersburg Police Department, officers responded to a report of an assault at approximately 6:03 p.m.

Police stated that by the time officers arrived, the individuals involved had already been separated and the altercation was not directly observed by responding officers.

In a statement provided to media outlets, police said:

“Today, approximately 6:03 p.m., Gaithersburg Police officers responded to a report of an assault at the early voting site located at the Bohrer Park Activity Center. By the time the officers arrived, the individuals involved had already been separated, and the incident was not directly observed by the police.”

Police further stated that one individual sustained a minor injury, officers completed a report, and no arrests were made at the scene.

Multiple news outlets have also reported that Congresswoman April McClain Delaney intervened following the altercation.

Assault Summons Issued

Court records filed on June 18 show that a criminal application resulted in the issuance of a summons naming Gabriel Acevero as a defendant in Montgomery County District Court.

The case, State of Maryland v. Gabriel Acevero (Case No. D-06-CR-26-006028), lists Fiorigi Renne as the complainant and alleges one count of second-degree assault.

The case is currently listed as open.

A preliminary inquiry hearing has been scheduled for July 28, 2026, in Montgomery County District Court in Rockville.

According to the court filing, a summons was issued on June 18 and probable cause was found in connection with the criminal application.

The court filing does not represent a finding of guilt and does not resolve the conflicting accounts regarding how the altercation began.

Conflicting Accounts of the Altercation

In the hours following the incident, multiple witness accounts emerged describing the confrontation. Those accounts, however, have not been consistent.

Some witnesses alleged that Acevero initiated the physical confrontation. Others claimed that Renne approached Acevero aggressively, struck first, and that Acevero acted in self-defense.

Because of those conflicting accounts, it remains unclear exactly how the physical altercation began.

Moderately MOCO has published video showing the aftermath of the incident but has not obtained video of the physical confrontation itself.

Acevero Says He Was Assaulted

Following the incident, Acevero released a public statement disputing allegations that he was the aggressor.

“Earlier today at the Early Voting site at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, I was assaulted by Mr. Fiorigi ‘Gino’ Renne and forced to defend myself,” Acevero stated.

According to Acevero, Renne was standing near the ballot drop box while Acevero was seated beneath a campaign tent.

Acevero alleges that Renne verbally confronted him, advanced toward him, entered his personal space, and then attempted to strike him.

“The police were called, they interviewed multiple eye witnesses who corroborated that Mr. Renne assaulted me and that I was defending myself,” Acevero stated. “I plan to press charges against Mr. Renne.”

Renne Disputes Acevero’s Account

Renne has publicly disputed Acevero’s characterization of the incident.

In comments to FOX 5 DC, Renne said he became involved after a disagreement between Acevero and a union worker regarding campaign activity near the voting site.

According to Renne, he approached Acevero after hearing comments directed at his wife.

“I heard him talk about my wife, so I moved in closer,” Renne told FOX 5. “And when I got into his reach where he could strike me, he did so.”

Renne alleges that Acevero struck him in the face.

“He sucker punched me with a closed fist in the left side of my lip,” Renne said.

Renne also rejected Acevero’s claim that he was the aggressor and described the delegate as unstable.

FOX 5 reported that Renne displayed cuts and bruises that he said resulted from the altercation.

According to FOX 5’s reporting, Renne stated that members of his group believed Acevero was crossing a Board of Elections demarcation line near the voting center. Renne claims that discussion escalated before Acevero allegedly struck him.

One union member interviewed by FOX 5 also criticized Acevero’s actions, stating that he witnessed the delegate assault a 72-year-old man. That account, however, conflicts with Acevero’s version of events, in which he maintains he acted in self-defense.

Additional Charges May Follow

The existence of the summons does not necessarily end the legal process.

Acevero has publicly stated that he intends to pursue charges against Renne, and it remains possible that additional complaints, cross-complaints, or other legal actions could be filed as the matter proceeds through the legal system.

At this time (6/19/2026 1:30am), no criminal charges against Renne appear in the information reviewed by Moderately MOCO.

Additional Reporting and Records Requests

Moderately MOCO has submitted a Maryland Public Information Act request seeking the police report and any available video footage related to the incident.

The court case remains pending, and both Acevero and Renne have publicly maintained that they were the victim of the altercation.

Given the conflicting accounts, outstanding records requests, and ongoing legal proceedings, key questions surrounding the incident remain unresolved.

This remains a developing story and will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Moderately MOCO’s Initial Coverage

Shortly after the incident, Moderately MOCO reported witness allegations regarding the altercation on social media. As additional information and conflicting accounts emerged, those posts were updated to reflect the evolving nature of the story, including Acevero’s public statement and reports from witnesses offering a different account of the incident.
