Why Are You Running For Office?
I am running for State Senator to continue my service to the residents of District 16 and all of Maryland. My purpose in serving always has been to help people, through both constituent services and policy work. My office strives to be responsive to constituents, helping them to the maximum extent possible. In addition, I work on policy to make the world a better place. I have successfully sponsored bills to: protect our online data privacy, reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals, support vulnerable residents, prohibit do-it-yourself machine guns, and protect our environment.
What Is The Biggest Issue Facing Voters In This Race?
There are a lot of issues that District 16 โ and Maryland – voters are facing right now. Overall, I would say affordability is the biggest issue. During this last session of the Maryland General Assembly we worked to address affordability through: reducing energy costs (insofar as the State can as much of it is federal & regional), funding public schools, supporting the creation of more housing, and opening pathways for new jobs. We also worked to be the buffer between the current federal Administration and our residents: we passed legislation curbing law enforcement’s cooperation with ICE, securing accessible elections, ensuring access to abortion care, and continuing to work on clean energy and a clean environment.
What Experience Best Prepares You For This Role?
I have served this district for 8 years – 6 as a Delegate and the last 2 as the Senator. In doing so, I have built strong relationships in Annapolis, in the Senate and in the House, and across the aisle, experience that is invaluable in getting things done for my constituents. Prior to elected office, I was a law clerk to a federal judge, a litigator, an advocate, and a lobbyist. Through these jobs, I have seen the law from different perspectives, helping me develop the skills to negotiate, think through possible unintended consequences, and work with others to come to a good solution.
What Would You Like Voters To Know About You Personally?
I live in Bethesda and raised my kids here. We love animals, and have a rescue dog (Noodles) and had a rescue rabbit (Quigley). I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, walking the dog along the Canal, reading, and watching happy movies.
