Every Sunday, just a short drive from the heart of Poolesville, something truly special happens along the banks of the Potomac River. From noon until 4 PM, weather permitting, Riley’s Lock transforms into a vibrant gathering of musicians, music lovers, and kindred spirits for Riley’s Lock Jams. This is a free, outdoor musical jam session like no other. If it’s at least 50 degrees out, the music is on!
A Musical Tradition Born from Isolation
Riley’s Lock Jams began in April 2020, born out of the isolation and longing for connection that so many felt during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the world locked down and traditional band practices halted, longtime friends and passionate musicians Craig Allison and Robert Sendry decided to do something about it. They took their instruments outdoors and started what would become a beloved local tradition.
The idea was simple: get together, make music, and invite others to join. What began as two friends trying to stay sane has since evolved into a weekly tradition with a growing group of musicians and a faithful crowd of supporters. They now call themselves the “Jamily”: a fitting name for the tight-knit, supportive, and joyful community that’s formed around these weekly gatherings.
Everyone Plays, Everyone Belongs
Unlike a traditional open mic night where you wait for your turn, Riley’s Lock Jams is a fully collaborative experience. Every musician is invited to join in on every single song. Sometimes there are more than 25 musicians playing together: guitars, violins, saxophones, drums, keyboards, and even triangles all blending together in beautiful harmony. It’s not about perfection, it’s about participation, joy, and the magic that happens when people come together to make music.
Want to sing? Grab one of the eight or more microphones that Craig Allison sets up each week. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just starting out, you’ll find an encouraging crowd and an open stage waiting for you.
Powered by Passion (and Batteries)
All the equipment: amps, microphones, speakers, is battery-powered. This event is both mobile and eco-conscious. Craig arrives hours early every Sunday to make sure there’s enough setup, space, and sound for everyone.
Pets, Picnics, and Peaceful Vibes
The location itself, Riley’s Lock at 13015 Riley’s Lock Road in Poolesville, MD, offers the perfect backdrop. Nestled along the scenic Potomac River, this spot combines the serenity of nature with the energy of live music. People bring their dogs, spread out blankets, pop open coolers, and share meals as the music flows. It’s BYO everything: chairs, drinks, food, and good vibes.
Families, couples, solo visitors, and furry friends are all welcome. It’s not uncommon to see kids dancing in the grass, dogs lounging in the shade, and spontaneous singalongs happening all afternoon long.
A Sunday Like No Other
Whether you’re a musician, a music lover, or just someone looking for a wholesome way to spend a Sunday afternoon, Riley’s Lock Jams offers something truly unique.
So pack your cooler, tune your guitar, leash up your pup, and come down to the river. The music is free, the views are stunning, and the community is unlike any other. If it’s Sunday from noon to 4 PM there’s a jam waiting for you at Riley’s Lock.
