Races to Watch

David Trone trails Neil Parrott

In what was expected to be a tight battle, as of election night David Trone trails Neil Parrott (via MD.gov) in the District 6 Congressional District. The Washington Post reported that this race remains undecided as of 11/8/2022 11pm.

David Trone is the Democrat who spent $12 million of his own money in a losing campaign in 2016, $13 million in a winning campaign in 2018, and according to Bethesda Beat loaned his campaign $12.55 million for this 2022 election cycle and was expected to be in a tight race.

This race also got more competitive after redistricting and a rejection of the originally proposed Maryland congressional map due to gerrymandering.

From a national standpoint this is most consequential undecided race in the state. Although many are expecting Trone to lead in mail-in ballots which are still to be counted, Democrats looking for Trone to pull it out can’t be happy with this election night total.

Here are a little more details from Montgomery Perspective on the breakdown of votes in this race.

Neil Parrott leads District 6 for Representative in Congress

Brenda Wolff maintains slight lead for BOE District 5

Brenda Wolff has a lead over Valerie Coll but the race is tightening and may go down to the wire.

If you remember from our primary rolling results, this race was super close then too.

MOCO Board of Education Races

We have our first results at 9:20 on 11/8/2022 for the Board of Education races.

While only 241 of 258 election day precincts have reported in and there is LOTS more mail-ins to count as well, these should give us a pretty good idea where each race stands.

It looks pretty safe to call these next few so I have highlighted them in green in the charts below.

Karla Silvestre has nearly 70% for BOE At Large over Mike Erickson.

Karla Silvestre leading Board of Education At Large

Julie Yang has over 65% of the vote for BOE District 3 over Scott Joftus

Julie Yang leading Board of Education District 3

The other two races are a little closer. They probably will not change too much unless there are drastic differences in the ballots counted so far and those to count but they are not so far out of reach so as to call yet. I have highlighted the leaders in orange.

Grace Rivera Oven appears likely to win against Esther Wells who did really good with over 40% going up against Apple Ballot and Post endorsements. Grace is also highlighted in green now after more precincts came in.

Grace Rivera Oven leads Board of Education District 1

Brenda Wolff has a lead over Valerie Coll but the race is tightening and may go down to the wire.

If you remember from our primary rolling results, this race was super close then too.

You can see all of the official AP race calls here on their website but they won’t do most of the local stuff we will be looking at.

We will continue to add to this section with results and articles about local results as they come in.

Governor – Wes Moore

AP almost immediately at 8:01 called the race for Governor presumably based on polling.

See more on Moore from MarylandMatters here.

Recreational Marijuana Question Passes

The AP called it for legalization of marijuana in Maryland.

Maryland Comptroller and Attorney General

At the State level, Brooke Lierman (Comptroller – via MD.gov) and Anthony Brown (Attorney General – via MD.gov) both have large leads and seem extremely likely to win if not at the same margins as Moore.

Lierman was declared winner and is the first woman elected to the position.

Montgomery County Government

At the partisan Montgomery County Government level, as was expected it seems like all of the Democratic Candidates won (though by very different margins – more on that in election data analysis in the coming days/weeks).

I feel confident in calling these races as even the closes in District 7 looks to be out of reach. It looks like this Bethesda Beat piece on the changing gender dynamics on the council now comes true.

Montgomery County Council

The next council looks like it will be:

Montgomery County Executive

We are also calling that Marc Elrich has won with at this time with 72% of the vote over Reardon “Sully” Sullivan.

Elrich holds onto his position with a strong lead tonight after super tight primary win over David Blair that we reported on here looking at who voted in the primary among registered voters and here looking at the totals before the recount.
