Maryland Highlight: US Census School Funding Report

October 8 2024

The US Census released their report today on school funding.

Take a look at how Maryland stacks up to other states as well as Maryland trends over the past 10 years.

Maryland is above the reporting states average but has a similar trend line.

Maryland typically has a bit more local funding than state but state funding trended up significantly compared to local in FY 2023 (presumably the beginning of Blueprint spending)

The breakdown of state vs. local expenditures is particularly interesting. When looking at the highest spending states some of them have a much higher state expenditure than local such as California, North Dakota, and Washington. Some like PA look more like Maryland with a bit more local than state and places like New Hampshire have way more local funding than state.

Wyoming in recent years went from a much higher state funding to having more local funding (than state) for the first time in 10 years in 2023. Wonder what happened there?
