Last week on Friday April 19, 2024, a trespasser at John F. Kennedy High School (MCPS Silver Spring, MD) wielded a knife during related to altercation involving a student.
Concern MCPS is Downplaying Incident
We received these videos from someone concerned that the letter from MCPS downplayed the incident by saying that “security responded immediately and disarmed the attacker” according to WJLA article that also provides more context, details, and response to some questions about security by MCPS.
We typically have a policy to not show fight videos that could encourage youth to fight more for reputation but have blurred out faces of all people involved in this video and given the seriousness of this incident are sharing the video.
It’s been reported that the knife wielder was an outsider not from the school and that after a fight with a student a knife was pulled out. We’re told that no minors or students were injured but that two security staff obtained minor injuries.
Description of Videos
It would appear the videos we obtained occurred after that initial fight. The first video shows MCPS staff (including but not only security) providing a protective barrier in a school hallway between someone swinging a knife and students in the area as the knife wielder approaches.
The second video appears to show the knife wielder in a classroom with two security guards and the knife wielder takes a swing at a security guard who responds and appears to disarm them and begin to apprehend the alleged assailant.
Conclusion
Both videos are short and just part of the overall event. Other students were clearly in the area for both videos and the videos take place in different locations within the school (a hallway and a classroom) so it’s unclear how long overall this took place.
