Why Are You Running For Office?

I was appointed Register of Wills last year following the death of my predecessor, Joe Griffin. I applied because families require an experienced leader to continue to provide the excellent service the Register’s office is known for. I am honored to carry forward Joe’s legacy of service, and I am dedicated to maintaining the high standards that have distinguished our office as the best in Maryland. I serve County residents with care, compassion and fairness. I am the only candidate who possesses the expertise that families and attorneys of Montgomery County must be able to rely upon.

What Is The Biggest Issue Facing Voters In This Race?

Because the Register of Wills is a public State office established under the Maryland Constitution to oversee the probate of decedents’ estates, the central question for voters is which candidate is best suited for the job. Our role is to ensure that a decedent’s final wishes are carried out as expressed in their will, to protect the interests of heirs and creditors, and to ensure compliance with Maryland law. We serve as the Clerk of the probate court and are responsible for collecting inheritance taxes, probate fees, and court costs.

In addition, the position requires the judgment and experience to navigate complex legal issues that arise during the probate process, including contested wills, questions regarding the validity of a will, and situations in which a personal representative is not fulfilling their legal responsibilities. In these cases, the Register must determine the appropriate course of action and, when necessary, advise the court. As such, the position requires extensive experience in probate law and in the procedures of the Register’s office. I am the only candidate who possesses this experience.

What Experience Best Prepares You For This Role?

Following a thorough vetting process, I was unanimously selected by the Circuit Court as Register due to my experience and demonstrated ability. I have worked for the Register’s office for over 17 years, and I have a deep understanding of estates and trusts law, probate procedures and the policies of the Register’s office. In my capacity as Court Administrator, my primary duty was to review each case and prepare the Court for probate hearings. I have assisted both the public and legal professionals in navigating probate and court procedures. I am also the first attorney to serve as Register.

What Would You Like Voters To Know About You Personally?

I am a life-long Montgomery County resident. I grew up in Kensington, where I live today with my family. I am the only candidate to apply for the position, and the only candidate to be subject to the Court’s vetting process. I have over 17 years of experience working for the Register as Court Administrator and an additional 13 years in private practice. All prior Registers have had significant experience working in the office before becoming Register. Experience and knowledge matter. Families need to rely on a Register who has a deep understanding of the law and probate procedures.
