According to sources, the former Republican County Executive Candidate Reardon Sullivan has dropped off signatures for a ballot initiative that would limit county executive to two terms. Sullivan lost in the 2020 General Election to County Executive Marc Elrich
Given that County Executive Elrich is serving his second term (current law allows for 3 terms), if this initiative were to pass, it would mean that Elrich cannot run again in 2026 leaving the position and open-seat race on the Democratic side.

Update: according to a new piece on Montgomery Perspective, The Committee For Better Government say they have submitted 13,000+ signatures which is the first of 3 deliveries.

Original: Sources indicate about 12,000 signatures were submitted to the board of elections. Some signatures end up thrown out the BOE for various reasons so it’s unclear if this will be enough to reach the 10,000 needed to get on the ballot. They have until July 29 to submit. By comparison, 9 Districts submitted 16,000 signatures in 2020 for that ballot initiative which was successfully added to the ballot but ended up losing in favor of adding two district seats and keeping the at-large positions on the council.
