MCPS Boundary Study Update June 6, 2025

Today MCPS sent out the following update on the boundary studies:

Dear MCPS Community,

Thank you to those who attended the boundary study engagement sessions that focused on the reopening of Charles W. Woodward High School, the opening of Crown High School and the expansion of Damascus High School. Adding these new spaces means the district needs to modernize a number of school boundaries. These changes will help populate the new high schools, ease overcrowding in the current high schools, and better balance enrollment across the high schools and middle schools included in the boundary study—ensuring all students have access to the best possible learning experiences.

The engagement sessions previewed proposed school boundaries for the 2027-2028 school year. It is important to know that these sessions did not announce the final boundaries; what was presented were initial options and the first step in this process. The boundary study process is guided by Board Policy FAA, Educational Facilities Planning. The four factors outlined in this Board Policy will be considered when recommendations for boundary options are developed. These four factors include:

  • Demographic characteristics of student population
  • Geography
  • Stability of school assignments over time
  • Facility utilization

These conversations about school boundaries could have an impact on many families. That’s why this process is centered on community engagement. Your feedback is essential to help us make thoughtful, informed decisions—and we truly need to hear from you. This fall, revised boundary options will be presented where we will seek additional feedback during this refined options phase.

Please complete our survey (WoodwardCrown and Damascus) to share your thoughts.

We know that you may still have questions or concerns about what the changes mean for your student. We encourage you to:
